Cross Border Mail

My primary collecting interest is  between the United States and the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, prior to Confederation. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia joined Canada East and Canada West, to form the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. Prince Edward Island joined Canada on July 1, 1873.

Private Die Proprietary Stamp Die Essays

The match and medicine stamps that almost were. These essays were engraved by the bank note company currently holding the printing contract (or the Bureau of Engraving and Printing after it took over printing of the private die stamps in 1880) but for a variety of reasons no stamps were ever issued from these dies.

Embossed Revenue Stamped Paper

Embossed revenues were first used in Colonial Massachusetts and New York. In 1765 Great Britain issued embossed revenues for use in the Americas. These Stamp Act revenues were one of the causes of the Revolutionary War. The United States also issued three Federal issues of embossed revenues between 1798 and 1817.

Lanman & Kemp has been in the wholesale and retail drug business since 1808. During the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War, Lanman & Kemp was used nearly every type of revenue stamp, including provisional cancels on government revenue stamps, private die proprietary stamps, and revenue stamped paper. After the repeal of the proprietary stamps, Lanman & Kemp began using a facsimile version of their private die proprietary stamp on their products. They continue to use their facsimile labels to this day.

Lanman & Kemp's business correspondence from the late 1850s through the early 1880s is also available to collectors. Due to the world-wide nature of their business, their postal history reveals the main international postal communication routes in the pre-UPU period.

Washington County Maine is nearly as large as Delaware and Rhode Island combined, but is sparsely populated, with a current population under 35,000. Despite its small population, its postal history is quite interesting due to the county's location on the border with New Brunswick, Canada.

I collect the postal history of the Apostolic Delegation of Frosinone, an administrative division of the Papal States, prior to Italian unification.

Venetian Republic AQ Lettersheets are considered by many to be the world's first postal stationery.
